Are you looking for a tasty alternative to cow’s milk, but do you find those packs of plant-based milk in the supermarket very expensive? Then make your own oat milk. Super easy to make with only 3 ingredients. Yes: within just ten minutes you can enjoy a delicious glass of homemade oat milk.
Making oat milk yourself is ideal. This gives you control over the ingredients and the sweetness of the drink. You only need two ingredients for the basic recipe: oats and water. To make the drink extra tasty, we season it with a pinch of salt, dates and a drop of vanilla extract. But you can also choose to add other seasonings, such as cinnamon.
Good to know: this oat milk can only be used cold (think of iced coffee or for your granola). It is better not to heat it, as this will thicken it a bit too much.
This is how you make oat milk yourself
Add the rolled oats, water, salt and any seasonings such as dates to a blender. Turn on the blender and let the oat milk mix for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Do not do this longer, otherwise the oat milk may become slimy.
Taste the drink. Add extra dates or other seasonings if needed and blend again for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Drain the thick liquid in a cheesecloth (or clean tea towel or cotton T-shirt). Scoop out the remaining goo and repeat this step one more time. We do this twice, so that no small particles of oat flakes end up in the drink.
Pour the oat milk into an airtight bottle and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
