The Kobo Elipsa is back, and in an even better version. In 2021 we were first introduced to Kobo’s largest e-reader and yes, we were pretty impressed about his arts. In 2023, version 2.0 has seen the light of day. And to reveal in advance: this Kobo Elipsa 2E e-reader has made a few welcome improvements compared to its predecessor… You can read more about it in this review, written by TechGirl Anke.
Reading books, that comes to me in waves. Sometimes I read three in a row, then nothing for months. I always take my Kobo Clara HD with me on holiday; small, compact, now a bit old, but it still works fine. And it is especially nice that it takes up little space in my suitcase.
The purpose of the Kobo Elipsa 2E
The Kobo Elipsa 2E was especially not designed with that in mind. As TechGirl Susan previously wrote about the first Elipsa: “This e-reader is not for the ‘cozy road reader’; it’s awkward to hold in one hand and isn’t waterproof, so it’s not the go-to reading gadget for an afternoon at the beach or pool. Do you want to make notes in your books and always have a digital notebook with you that also syncs with Dropbox? Then the Kobo Elipsa might be just what you’re looking for.”
With that in mind, I started testing this large e-reader. After all, you have to review the device for what it was made for.
Design and screen
My first Kobo was the size of a compact book, has one button (on and off) and really focuses on one task: reading. The Elipsa is really a different story. The screen is twice as large, the brightness is a lot better and it comes with a stylus. The Elipsa 2E is the same size as its predecessor (10.3 inches), which can be compared to about 75% of the length of an A4 sheet. Wow. The e-reader is also about the same weight as the first generation (390 grams). The Sleep Cover, which is not included as standard, adds about 100 grams extra. Plus the stylus… we’re talking about a total of at least more than 500 grams. Quite a workout if you could manage that.
The Elipsa 2E is made of black plastic, as you see on the entire Kobo line. I don’t know if Kobo does this as standard these days, but I saw it on the box with the 2E: the device is made of recycled plastic. Something I’ve always had sympathy for.
The screen is not completely evenly placed in the middle: on the right side you see that the edge is 1.5 to 2 centimeters thick, while all other edges are only 0.5 centimeters wide. I suspect that this has been done for people who do want to hold the e-reader in their hand, and that you can keep a grip with a finger over the screen.
Furthermore, this new Kobo e-reader is equipped with the patented ComfortLight Pro screen lighting, with which you can not only adjust the brightness of the screen, but there is also a Blue Light filter if you want to do something before going to sleep. . The latter is an improvement over the first version Elipsa. Dark mode is still available, which gives you white letters on a black screen instead of the other way around.
You slide the Elipsa 2E into the Sleep Cover with the thinnest long side. You will feel a ‘click’ as soon as the magnetic ends touch. The included stylus also clicks magnetically into the cover of the Sleep Cover. Smart thinking about it, because that’s not how it rolls anywhere. A beautiful and smart design as far as I’m concerned!
In use
Reading with the Kobo Elipsa 2E
Nice reading; yes, you certainly can with this e-reader. In vertical position, or turn it horizontally for a different reading ratio. I find that super useful. In combination with the cover, you can even leave the e-reader standing, but make sure that the surface is not too slippery, because then it will slide away. (Kobo, this folding laptop stand could be another idea for version 3.0?)
Customize gestures
Also nice: you can easily make adjustments to the operation of the screen. Where you want to touch the screen to turn the page, for example. The stylus is very nice, so you can use it to make scribbles, notes and drawings in the book.
Take notes for work
But the real added value is in the notes and notes that you can also make on blank sheets of e-paper, for example during work. No more ten thousand scribbles, post-its and the like on your desk, no. You can now keep those kinds of handwritten scribbles together in the e-reader. And yes, fortunately that works very well. I’ve also tried that with an iPad plus stylus, but that feels a bit mechanical. This feels much more natural with this Elipsa 2E. You can even keep your wrist on the screen while you write, without the screen performing any other commands. As far as I’m concerned, the only real point for improvement is the ‘process time’; after each scribble, the screen flashes briefly to save the scribble. After a lot of writing, that’s a bit annoying.
Charge battery
We continue with the positives: again fine (how many times have you called?) – charging is as simple as ever. Plug in, charge, and you’re good to go for weeks. I haven’t checked exactly how long the Elipsa 2E lasts on a charge, I tested it too short for that, but at least write down only three weeks. The fact that the stylus can now also be charged via a cable is a big plus in my opinion compared to its predecessor. Batteries are so 1999.
Conclusion of this Kobo Elipsa 2E review
The Kobo Elipsa 2E is the logical, better successor to the Elipsa. The improvements are in small things, but offer a lot of convenience. Think of the stylus that can simply be charged, and no longer works with separate batteries. And the bedtime function, for example. The writing on the screen has also become a lot more logical, it feels more natural than ever. This e-reader is now more than just for writers, note-takers, and scribblers in the margins: the average office job person can now also benefit from it!
