Official: Maarten Stekelenburg ends goalkeeper career

Maarten Stekelenburg has decided to stop after this season, reports Ajax.nl. The third goalkeeper of the team from Amsterdam will say goodbye to the Ajax crowd this Sunday around the home game against FC Utrecht.

Stekelenburg made his debut for Ajax 1 almost 21 years ago. On August 11, 2002, the goalkeeper was allowed to play for Ajax 1 for the first time. That was in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Scale against PSV: 3-1 win. With Ajax, the goalkeeper eventually won four national titles, four KNVB Cups and three times the Johan Cruijff Shield.

So far, Stekelenburg has been under the bar 311 times for Ajax 1. He played for the Orange in 63 international matches. In addition, he reached 1 World Cup final (2010). The Ajax player also played for AS Roma, Fulham, AS Roma, Southampton and Everton.

Ajax – FC Utrecht starts on Sunday at 2:30 PM in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
