Nico Denz after victory in stage 12 Giro: ‘I was not meant to be in the flight’

Stage twelve of the Giro fell prey to the escapees, eventually Nico Denz emerged as the strongest. The German settled the four-man sprint in his favor. It is the biggest win of his career to date. He was very happy afterwards. “This is a really great win, I don’t know what to say,” the German said at the finish.

Denz is known as a speed rider pur sang, but usually races in a serving role. That was actually the intention again today, but it turned out just a bit differently. “Initially it was not the intention that I would be in the breakaway, other riders from the team would take care of that. But later I got the green light because not everyone felt well.”

Once in flight, the job was only half done. The BORA-hansgrohe rider had a hard time with his fellow escapees. “On the last climb I was really on the limit, I could barely catch up. The arrival was also difficult, it all went very quickly. But luckily I crossed the finish line first. This is really great”, concludes the brand new stage winner in a grand tour.
