Nico Denz won his second stage of this Giro on Saturday. The German speed rider was the strongest of the leading group and settled the thrilling sprint in his favor. Afterwards, the BORA-hansgrohe driver found it difficult to comprehend what he had achieved. “It was great anyway that I won one stage, but two? I really never took that into account.”
Stage fourteen was destined for escapees, Denz was part of a large group of no less than 27 men. When the game came to the wagon, he initially missed the trick. But he was able to return just in time. “We really did everything we could to return. With one kilometer to go I closed the last gap. Everyone looked at each other, but I had already won a stage and wanted to give everything. That worked out well.”
It is by all accounts a great achievement for Denz, who was previously mainly known as a servant. “I have no idea what is happening here. I was already satisfied with one win, but now I even have two. The Giro has been a success without a doubt, whatever happens.”
