Newcastle hoped to win the game and also got the necessary chances: the number of goal attempts was 23-1 in favor of the home team, who also had 77 percent possession. However, Leicester held on. Sven Botman was on the field for ninety minutes at Newcastle.

Newcastle have 70 points with one game to go; Manchester United follows with 69 points and two games to go. Erik ten Hag’s men can therefore claim third place, but both positions are good for direct Champions League qualification.

Leicester, meanwhile, are on the brink of relegation. The 2016 national champion is in eighteenth place with 31 points. There is one more scenario conceivable that avoids relegation: the Foxes must win at home against West Ham United on the final day, while Everton must not win at home against Bournemouth. In that case, Leicester will hold on and Everton will be relegated.
