The increasing deployment of generative AI and other leading technologies are laying the groundwork for a new reality in which the physical and digital worlds merge seamlessly. This is the main conclusion of Accenture’s latest report entitled “When Atoms Meet Bits: The Foundations of Our New Reality”. The report identifies four trends that are enabling this integrated world and changing the future of businesses.

The survey of 4,777 C-level executives across 34 countries and 25 industries shows that 98 percent of them believe AI models will be essential to achieving their business goals over the next three to five years. In addition, 81 percent of respondents said they plan to explore generative AI technologies in 2023, driven in part by the exponential growth of GPT models in recent years and the launch of ChatGPT. According to Accenture, language-based AI will complement up to 40 percent of all work hours.

“The development of AI offers us unprecedented possibilities and opportunities”, says Nicole van Det, Country Managing Director Accenture Netherlands. “However, it is critical that we commit to ethically responsible use of this technology. A pause in AI development is not a viable option, but rather an unnecessary delay in progress. We need to promote AI in a transparent and open way. use and implement, maintaining an ongoing dialogue to ensure safe and responsible use.”

Roy Ikink, Technology Lead Accenture Netherlands, adds: “Cloud, metaverse and AI are creating a closer connection between our digital and physical realities. The impact of generative AI will transform business. It is imperative that leaders act and invest now in data, people and fundamental business changes to meet the unique needs of their organization.”

The Technology Vision 2023 report identifies four trends that bring this new reality within reach:

  • Generative AI: AI supports humans as a co-pilot, creative partner or advisor. Nearly all executives see generative AI fueling creativity and innovation (98%) and ushering in an era of enterprise intelligence (95%).
  • Digital identity: It is necessary to authenticate digital users and assets in order to function properly in both the digital and physical worlds. According to 85% of executives, this is not only a technical issue, but also a strategic necessity.
  • My data, your data, our data: AI cannot function optimally if organizations have no control over their data. That’s why companies need to break down data silos and modernize their data environment. For 90 percent of executives, data is decisive for their competitive advantage.
  • The Eternal Frontier: The interaction between science and technology is accelerating and has a reinforcing effect; one development accelerates the other. According to 75 percent of respondents, this can help us solve the major global challenges.
