According to the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Mark Cavendish will put an end to his rich career after this season. He will officially announce this during a press conference on Monday at 1.30 pm. The ‘Manx Express’, as it is nicknamed, celebrates its 38th birthday today.
Cavendish is regarded as one of the very best sprinters in cycling history. There are no fewer than 161 professional victories on his palmares. No active rider comes close to that number. The number two, Peter Sagan, has 121 victories on his honors list.
He achieved his greatest triumph in 2011 by winning the world title in Copenhagen. Furthermore, Milan-San Remo also has a monument on his honors list. In the Tour he won 34 stage victories between 2008 and 2021, a record he shares with Eddy Merckx. If Cav can add one more in July, he will be the record holder alone.
