ADO Den Haag concluded the 2022/2023 season on Friday evening in Wijderworm with a 2-0 victory at Young AZ. At halftime, the team from The Hague already had a 1-0 lead thanks to a header by Thomas Verheydt from a cross by Amir Absalem. The center forward ended the season with 14 goals and 6 assists. After tea, substitute Joël Zwarts set the final score at 0 – 2 one minute before the end.
Farewell trainers
For both Dick Advocaat and Maarten Martens (photo AZ), this match was all about saying goodbye as trainer of their club.
Seven other names in the base
Compared to the last match against FC Dordrecht (2 – 2, ed.), there were seven other names on the match form. After a long injury, Hugo Wentges made his appearance again in the Hague goal (11 November last year against Almere City, he was injured). Rodriguez, Werker, Absalem, Breinburg, Klas and Sleegers also returned.
Loss of points against the number last and second last determines missing Play-Offs
Losing points against the number 20 (Jong FC Utrecht) and the number 19 (FC Den Bosch) respectively four and five points were decisive for not reaching the Play-Offs. With these nine points, the Hagenaar had finished in fifth place and therefore in the top eight in the final ranking.
25 fewer goals determines failed season
Compared to last season, in which the Play-Offs were reached, the residents of The Hague scored no less than 25 times less, which is the main reason why there is no post-competition football in the Bingoal stadium. Last season, ADO finished 4th in the final standings with 67 points and the goals: 76–53. This season ended in 12th place with 51 points and the goals: 51–57.
More clarity about management and ‘trainer’ next week
From America (Bolt) it has always been communicated that after the last round of play there will be more clarity about who will form the new management, whether there will also be the name of the new trainer as successor to Dick Advocaat is not 100% certain.
